The top AI wellbeing and sleep coach apps compared, and what a coach that plans your rest should do

Calm, Headspace, Finch, Sleep Cycle, RISE and Oura all promise better rest. Here’s what each one really does and costs, and what changes when your wellbeing coach can see your whole week and plans rest in before you need it.

Last checked 22 October 2026How we checked

Facts come from each maker’s own website, help pages, privacy policy and App Store listing, and link to their source. Prices and ratings are from the US App Store on that date. We didn’t install or test the apps. Retenna is our product and isn’t out yet: where we describe it, it’s what it’s built to do.

Why most wellbeing and sleep apps fall short

Rest is usually the first thing to go when a week fills up. A move, a launch at work or a run of late nights, and the wind-down, the early night and the quiet Sunday quietly disappear.

Most wellbeing and sleep apps help once you’re already tired: a meditation, a sleep story, or a score in the morning telling you that you slept badly. Few of them can see that you move house in 12 days, or that chores after nine leave you wired at bedtime. Fewer still can change anything about the week that’s causing it. A good coach plans rest in before you need it.

What a good AI wellbeing coach knows

  • How you sleep, and what costs you sleep. Stressful weeks, late chores, the night before a big day.
  • What’s coming up. The move, the presentation, the late party, the trip, and how each will squeeze your rest.
  • What you actually keep up. Not the ideal routine, but the one you stick to in a busy week.
  • Your training and your days. When you need a rest day, and when a long day on your feet already counts.
  • Its own limits. A busy week is a coaching problem. Something heavier is a job for a person, and a good coach knows the difference.

What it should do for you

Knowing all that only helps if it changes your week. A good AI wellbeing coach should:

  • Plan rest before you need it: wind-downs, early nights and a clear day after the big ones.
  • Spread the load, so a big job becomes short evenings that end on time instead of two lost weekends.
  • Protect your sleep before big days, by moving the things that would eat into it.
  • Work with your trainer, so short nights mean an easier session, not a failed hard one.
  • Explain itself. “Packing ends by 21:00, because late chores leave you wired” is more useful than a sleep score.

App by app

Calm

Cost
Some features free; Premium listed from $14.99
Where
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Android

Calm says it has been downloaded 180 million times. It’s best known for its library: meditations, Sleep Stories, breathwork and check-ins, with a new daily meditation and other fresh content. It recommends content from your preferences, keeps you going with reminders and streaks, and sends your sessions to Apple Health.

Worth knowingWe found no named AI coach in the main Calm app, and nothing that plans your day: it’s a library you choose from. Its terms call it wellness support, not diagnosis or treatment, and its privacy policy allows some data to be shared for advertising in ways US law can count as a sale. Calm Sleep and Calm Health are separate apps.

Headspace and Ebb

Cost
Trial, then $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year
Where
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android

Headspace says it has been downloaded more than 105 million times, in 200 countries and regions. Alongside its meditations, Ebb is an AI companion you talk to by voice or text: it helps you reflect, suggests Headspace content and remembers what you’ve talked about before. Human coaching and therapy are available separately, at extra cost.

Worth knowingEbb is only for paid members aged 18 and over, in English, in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Headspace says Ebb isn’t clinical care or a therapist, and no person watches conversations live. Messages are encrypted and not used for targeted ads, though some staff can see them for quality checks. We found nothing about it reading your calendar or a wearable.

Finch

Cost
Free; optional Finch Plus
Where
iPhone, iPad, Android

Finch is a self-care app built around a virtual pet that earns rewards when you complete self-care tasks. You set goals, check in on your mood, journal, take quizzes and try exercises picked for you, and it shows trends from your moods, journal tags and goals. Your waking and sleeping times shape the pet’s day.

Worth knowingWe found no AI coach in Finch’s own materials, and nothing about reading your sleep from a tracker. Its help pages say your data stays on your phone unless you make an account for cloud backup, so without one it can be lost with your phone. Its full privacy policy wouldn’t open when we checked.

Sleep Cycle and Luma

Cost
Free tracking; Premium for coaching on your sleep
Where
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android

Sleep Cycle tracks your sleep from sound and movement, without a wearable, picks up snoring and coughing, and wakes you with a smart alarm. Luma, the AI sleep coach it launched in December 2025, connects your tracked nights to your goals, remembers things like stress, a partner or pets, and adapts its conversations over time. It works with Apple Health and Apple Watch.

Worth knowingChatting to Luma is free, but coaching on your own sleep needs Premium, and Luma reached new iPhone users first. Its privacy policy says that, if you agree, short audio clips help train its sound models and may be reviewed by people, and coaching data goes, pseudonymised, to providers including OpenAI. Planning around your calendar isn’t mentioned.

RISE

Cost
No free plan; membership after a 7-day trial; AI Expert extra
Where
iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android

RISE says more than 10 million people use it. It estimates how much sleep you need and how much you owe, predicts when your energy will peak and dip, and sharpens its estimates as your nights add up. It reminds you about habits like winding down, reads data from Apple Health, Health Connect and wearables, and on iPhone can add your energy peaks and dips to your calendar.

Worth knowingIts AI Expert coaching costs extra. Adding blocks to your calendar isn’t the same as moving things for you, and we found no sign it does. RISE itself says its predictions can miss what it can’t track, like caffeine, medication and exercise. Its privacy policy says it doesn’t sell your data.

Oura and Advisor

Cost
$5.99 a month or $69.99 a year, plus the ring
Where
iPhone, Android, with an Oura Ring

Oura makes a smart ring, and its filing reports 5 million paying members at the end of June 2026. The app turns the ring’s readings into daily sleep, readiness and activity guidance, with a Rest Mode for when you need it. Advisor, its AI, uses your scores, activities, profile and past conversations, keeps memories to personalise its advice, and can check in at a time you choose. It also has a dedicated model for women’s health.

Worth knowingAdvisor needs a Gen3 ring or later and an active membership. Oura’s privacy policy lets it use your personal data to develop its own AI features, though it says it doesn’t sell data for other companies’ AI training or for cross-site ads. You can delete Advisor’s memories, and calendar connections aren’t mentioned.

Where Retenna’s wellbeing coach goes further

These are good apps, and some are excellent at what they do: Calm and Headspace for something to listen to, Sleep Cycle, RISE and Oura for understanding your nights, Finch for gentle daily habits. But nearly all of them work after the fact. They tell you how you slept, or help you calm down tonight. None of them can see that the move is in 12 days and change the evenings in between.

That’s the difference that matters. Rest isn’t lost at bedtime; it’s lost earlier, when the evening fills up with chores, the workout runs long and the day after a big one gets booked. A coach that can only see your nights can tell you what went wrong, but it can’t move anything.

Retenna’s wellbeing coach shares one picture of your life with your trainer, your nutritionist, your planner and the rest of your experts, so it can protect your rest before it’s gone, and explain every change it makes.

Twelve days to a house move, with rest planned in first

Here’s a real-life squeeze, as Retenna is built to handle it. You move house on Saturday the 11th, with the keys at 10:00. Over the months, it has learned a few things about you: stressful weeks cost you about an hour of sleep a night, chores after 21:00 leave you wired at bedtime, and in busy weeks you keep 20-minute workouts and skip the longer ones.

Sunday · 12 days ahead

Packing split into short evenings that end by 21:00, 20-minute workouts, a first-night box, and the day after the move kept clear.

Why: packing over two long weekends would leave you wired and take both of them, and you’ll want the day after the move to unpack and rest.

Done for you

Then the rest of the team fits around it, each with a reason you can see:

Week 2 · 22:00 every night

A wind-down every night, with your phone on quiet.

Why: stressful weeks cost you an hour of sleep a night.

Done for you

Week 2 · your personal shopper

A blackout blind for the new bedroom, £32, delivered on the 11th.

Why: it faces east with no blind, and you wake with the light.

Waits for your yes

Moving day · Tom and Aisha

Ask Tom and Aisha to come at 09:30, with lunch on you.

Why: they offered to help.

Waits for your yes

Your trainer swaps 45-minute workouts for the 20-minute ones you actually keep in busy weeks. On the Friday night, a first-night box is packed: bedding, kettle, chargers, toiletries and tomorrow’s clothes, so the first night isn’t a hunt through boxes. Broadband for the new place, set to start on moving day, waits for your yes because it’s new spending, and the Sunday after is kept clear, with a slow morning and nothing planned. You get evenings that end on time, even in a move, and a dark bedroom from night one. On moving day, you just move in.

Before a big dayType “I got the interview!” and it already knows you sleep badly before big days, 4 times out of your last 5. Prep goes on Tuesday, because working late on Wednesday would cost you sleep, Wednesday’s hard workout becomes a walk, and there’s a wind-down at 21:30 with an alarm set for 07:00.

With your trainerAfter two short nights, today’s intervals become an easy 5 km, because you tend to cut hard sessions short when you’re tired. After a five-hour hike on Saturday, Sunday is a rest day with 20 minutes of stretching.

When plans changeIf a rehearsal moves to 08:00 on Wednesday, lights out moves to 22:00 on Tuesday, breakfast is ready the night before and the gym moves to Thursday lunchtime. Moving Tuesday drinks with Sam to next week waits for your yes, because it involves Sam.

How it learns what you need, and how you shape it

Retenna learns from what you do, what you choose and what you tell it, and keeps it in one living model of you, shared by every expert. It’s built from your life, so no two are the same.

  1. Day oneIt asks. You tell it what’s coming up and how you’d like it to help, and it checks with you before it plans anything.
  2. Within weeksIt suggests. “Packing in short evenings that end by 21:00?” You say yes, or pick something else.
  3. In timeIt decides the way you would. Rest goes in first, further ahead, with the reason and an Undo.

Over the months, it builds up the things you’d never think to tell an app, but that decide how rested you feel:

  • What costs you sleep. “Stressful weeks cost you about an hour a night”, from four months of sleep.
  • What leaves you wired. “Chores after 21:00 leave you wired at bedtime”, from your evening check-ins.
  • What you keep up when you’re busy. “In busy weeks you keep 20-minute workouts and skip longer ones”, 9 of your last 10.
  • How you are before big days. “You sleep badly before big days”, 4 of your last 5.

Your rulesYou choose what it simply does and tells you about after, and what waits for your yes. Your own plans, like a wind-down or an early night, can just happen; new spending can ask first. Anything that involves another person always asks first.

Undo teaches itEvery plan comes with the reason and an Undo, and it notices what you undo. Keep undoing the workouts it moves onto your Sunday mornings, and it suggests a rule:

Retenna noticed · 3 of the last 3 Sundays

Ask first on Sunday mornings?

Why: you’ve undone every workout it moved there.

Waits for your yes

See, change or forgetYou can see everything it has learned about your rest, and change or forget any of it. If a note is wrong, or no longer true, correct it, and it plans from the new one.

How to choose

If you want something to listen to tonight, or a clearer picture of your nights, one of these will do it well. If you want your rest looked after as part of your whole week, that’s Retenna.

What to check before you trust one

  • Your health data. Sleep, moods and check-ins are among the most personal things you’ll share. Check where they’re stored, who they’re shared with, and whether you can delete them, including anything the app has learned.
  • Training. Oura’s policy lets it use your data to develop its own AI. Sleep Cycle trains its sound models on audio clips if you agree. Headspace staff can see some Ebb conversations for quality checks. Check what applies, and whether you can say no. Retenna’s answer is simple: your data is never used to train public AI models, and what it learns from you stays yours.
  • Advertising. Some policies allow data to be shared for advertising in ways US law counts as a sale. Others, like RISE, say they don’t sell your data. Look for a clear answer.
  • What it isn’t. None of these apps diagnoses anything, and Headspace says plainly that Ebb isn’t a therapist. A sleep score isn’t a sleep test, and a predicted energy dip isn’t a measurement.
  • When it’s more than a busy week. If low mood, anxiety or poor sleep carry on, or you’re finding things hard, talk to your GP or a qualified professional. In a crisis, call your local emergency number, or a helpline such as Samaritans on 116 123 (UK and Ireland) or 988 (US).

How Retenna’s wellbeing coach works

About Retenna · that’s us

Every lifestyle expert, one mind that knows you.

Its wellbeing coach works from your sleep, read from the health apps and wearables you already use, along with your evening check-ins, your calendar and your training. When a house move lands 12 days away, it plans rest in first: packing in short evenings that end by 21:00, a wind-down every night, a first-night box and a clear Sunday after. You see why it planned each one, and you can undo any of it. It works out how much sleep you need, shifts your bedtime ahead of a long-haul flight so jet lag bites less, and has the nutritionist plan lighter, earlier dinners when sleep matters most (our AI sleep coach guide goes deeper).

It isn’t a therapist or a doctor, and it doesn’t diagnose anything. It looks after the practical side of rest: your evenings, your early nights and the days you need to recover. Health questions are for your GP or another professional.

And your wellbeing coach is one of a team, in one complete app.

What makes Retenna different

  1. Every expert, in one app. A stylist, a beauty and grooming expert, a personal trainer, a nutritionist, a wellbeing coach, a planner for your days, occasions and trips, and a personal shopper, each with a full space of its own. They remember what matters to the people you love, and an assistant runs through all of them.
  2. One living model of you. It learns from what you do, what you choose and what you tell it. On day one it asks; soon it suggests; in time it decides the way you would. You can see, change or forget any of it.
  3. Every expert plans together. They share one picture of your week, so a change in one reshapes the rest: leg day moves, so dinner is ready that night; brows move, so any redness settles before the party.
  4. Everything inside your rules. You choose what it simply does and what waits for your yes. Every plan comes with the reason and an Undo, and anything that involves another person always asks first.

Questions

What’s the best AI wellbeing coach app?

It depends on what you want help with. For meditations and sleep stories, Calm and Headspace; for understanding your sleep, Sleep Cycle, RISE or Oura; for gentle daily habits, Finch. If you want a coach that plans rest into your whole week and changes the plans that would cost you it, that’s what Retenna is built for.

What’s the best AI sleep coach app?

Of the apps we checked, three have an AI sleep coach you can talk to. Sleep Cycle’s Luma works from nights tracked without a wearable, and needs Premium to coach on your own sleep. RISE’s AI Expert is a paid add-on to its membership. Oura’s Advisor needs the ring and a membership. Retenna’s wellbeing coach is different: it plans your week so the sleep isn’t lost in the first place.

Is an AI wellness coach the same as a wellbeing coach?

Mostly, yes. “Wellness” is the more common word in the US, and “wellbeing” in the UK. Either way, look at what the app actually does: some are libraries of content, some track your sleep, and a few plan around your life.

Can an AI wellbeing coach replace a therapist?

No. Even the apps with AI companions, like Headspace’s Ebb, say they aren’t therapy or clinical care. Retenna’s wellbeing coach isn’t a therapist either: it plans the practical side of rest. If you’re struggling, talk to your GP or a qualified professional. In a crisis, call your local emergency number, or a helpline such as Samaritans on 116 123 (UK and Ireland) or 988 (US).

What does Retenna use to plan my rest?

What you do, what you choose and what you tell it, including your evening check-ins. It’s built to connect to your calendar, such as Google or Outlook, and to read your sleep and workouts from the health apps and wearables you already use, such as Apple Health, Health Connect and Samsung Health. You choose what to connect, and it asks for what it needs and no more.

Is my health data private with Retenna?

Your Retenna is private to you. Everything it knows is locked to your account and walled off from everyone else’s, on Microsoft Azure’s secure cloud, encrypted when stored and on the way. You can see, correct, export or delete what Retenna holds about you, including anything it has learned. If you turn learning on, it learns from what you do and tell it to personalise your own experience, and what it learns stays with your account, never used for anyone else. We never use your information to train public AI models. We never sell your information, and detailed analytics and personalised ads are optional, for adults only, and off unless you say yes. Health features are for adults aged 18 and over.

In short

Today’s wellbeing and sleep apps are good at the night itself: something to listen to, a score in the morning, a coach to talk to. A good AI wellbeing coach looks after the days before it. It learns what costs you sleep, plans rest in before the week fills up, and moves what would get in the way, with a reason for every change. It’s better still when it works with your trainer and planner, so rest fits the week you’re actually having.
